01 Diagnostics
Listen before acting.
We begin not with answers, but with questions. Before anything is designed or decided, K2K invests deeply in understanding the community, its environment, its people, its strengths and its fault lines. Everything that follows is grounded in what we find here.
What we do:
  • Rapid Assessment
  • Public Housing Profiling
  • Household Survey
  • Ethnographic Studies
  • Spatial Mapping
02 Mobilisation
Bring people together, deliberately and inclusively.
With a clear picture of the community established, K2K begins active mobilisation. We engage every segment of the community, youth, elderly, women, minority groups, and establish FORKOM, the formal community platform that becomes the engine of everything that follows.
What we do:
  • Festival: Open Day, Dapur Komuniti, Wayang Pacak
  • Wellness: Aktif Bersama
  • Sports: K2K Juara
  • Self-Development: Skills-sharing workshop
03 Co-Design
Ownership begins at the design table.
With an organised community in place, K2K works alongside residents to identify, shape and validate the initiatives that will make the greatest difference. Nothing moves forward without genuine community buy-in.
What we do:
  • Social Platforms
  • Transformation Plan
  • Participatory Physical Project Planning
  • Feasibility & Impact Analysis
04 Action
Plans become movement. Communities lead.
K2K's role shifts from organiser to supporter. Residents drive change. We walk alongside, providing technical support without substituting community agency, and developing the local leaders who will carry the work forward long after we step back.
What we do:
  • Awareness Programme
  • Community-led Programme
  • Women’s Empowerment
  • Youth Development
  • Elderly Care
  • Mental Health Support
05 Continuity
Not an ending. A transition.
The final step is planned from the very beginning. K2K is designed to make itself unnecessary, ensuring communities have the capacity, leadership and institutional connections to sustain their own progress long into the future.
What we do:
  • Impact Analysis
  • Multi-Stakeholder Capacity Building
  • Strategic Policy Advisory
  • Nobody knows a neighbourhood better than the people who live in it. Across K2K’s ten sites, residents spotted what was missing and built the answer themselves, from cleaner corridors to stronger families to new ways of earning. These are their stories, grouped into five areas of change. Each one was imagined and led by the community, with K2K walking alongside.

    Cleanliness and Safety

Cleanliness and safety are part of the micro-culture in all communities, and as with all facets of culture, efforts, time and care go a long way in cultivating the right values. With the right foundation, the impact of robust cleanliness and safety culture will help create a healthy, safe and happy community.

Friendly volunteers for a serious task (PPR Lembah Subang 1)
Once the ball has started rolling, the momentum makes it easier for further improvements to be made. The Skim Rondaan Sukarela (SRS) of Block H, PPR LS1 was already operational, then they utilized the community grant to upskill and upgrade. Aside from the trainings provided by relevant government agencies, the team also recruited 100 more volunteers and installed 28 more CCTV. The installation of CCTV has helped to reduce petty crimes and inappropriate activities, including the theft of motorcycle parts or damage to motorcycles, and the use of secluded areas by couples.

A bonus impact is the ‘infecting’ power this project had on surrounding communities. Following the positive outcomes achieved by Block H, other blocks at LS1 were inspired to take similar initiatives. Although the K2K Community Grant had already ended, these blocks independently mobilised their own resources to install CCTV systems and address safety and security concerns within their respective areas. Among the blocks that subsequently installed CCTV were Block G, Block F, Block E and Block C, each with their own objectives and achievements.

This project demonstrated that people show up with genuine passion to contribute and volunteer for their community when they have the trust and right support.

Urban farming management (PPR Taman Mulia )
The residents already had a community farm in their neighbourhood, but they knew they had not maximized its potential and utility. With the community grant earned, they embarked on a project to enhance their knowledge and capacity in in garden management and urban agriculture. Over 6 months, a total 35 participants attended 28 classes and training, where they learnt about urban agriculture management and acquired practical skills in managing urban farming activities.

The security and productivity of the community garden was also improved through the installation of fencing, walls and a hydroponic system to grow vegetables. The community has since increased the amount of their produce and has even shown amazing resourcefulness by coming up with value-added products, which are jam and cordial made from their roselle harvest. In recognition of these achievements, the community garden has since secured further funding and support from Jabatan Pertanian, and has collaborated with Hong Leong Foundation on a waste recycling programme.

Kebun Komuniti PPR Taman Mulia is now the pride and the passion of the neighbourhood, and being recently conferred the Anugerah DBKL in recognition of its outstanding management of the community garden is a well-deserved icing on the cake.

    Resilience and Agency
Life can be rife with challenges, even more so for the communities living in public housing. A host of things may help in mitigating the challenges, or in facing them, including support from family members, friends, neighbours, the community and agencies or institutions, in general. However, with a strong identity and sense of self, agency and self-efficacy would work wonders in boosting one’s resilience.

Beautiful batik products (PA Seri Kota)
BIKIN SENI is a programme in collaboration with Miracle Design tailored for those with talents and passion in textile arts and craft. With only a modest amount of grant, a few local creatives in Perumahan Awam Seri Kota seized the chance to train their neighbours in craft. Skills such as fabric stamping, sewing and the making of batik products were taught, on top of exposure to opportunities in income creation in the area of arts and culture. A total of 30 youth and women joined the 9 sessions of training to gain new skills that filled their time productively.

Some of the participants even got to showcase their batik products to Institusi Kraf dan Kraftangan and sold their locally made craft product at the National Craft Festival. Beyond selling, those skills enabled them to teach others, including people beyond their own housing—they recently ran sessions for the public at the KL Festival at Dataran Merdeka.

This shows the leverage in small investments: modest social capital, placed where residents can act on it, compounds into visible change. The impact rippled further and creates long-term effect that benefits even more people.

Tuition classes for SPM students (PPR Taman Mulia)
With SPM being the most important examination in the schooling system of Malaysia, a helping hand for the students preparing to sit for the exam was very welcomed. Four core SPM subjects were selected as the focus of the tuition classes which were Bahasa Melayu, Bahasa Inggeris, Matematik, and Sains. More than 20 students consistently attended 48 tuition classes on these 4 subjects over 6 months.

Besides covering for the cost of tutors to teach in the tuition classes, the grant was also utilized to furnish the space allocated with 20 sets of study desks and chairs to turn it into a classroom, as well as equipment to facilitate their learning including a printer, a projector and a projection screen. A distinguishing feature of the programme is that it drew its tutors from among local residents rather than engaging external teachers. As the tutors are familiar with the students’ circumstances and the local context, this approach has fostered stronger rapport between tutors and students, while also building capacity within the community itself.

The programme has delivered highly encouraging results: five students achieved straight A’s in SPM, while many others obtained commendable results as well.

    Super Mama cooking classes
A series of cooking classes were organized for the women of PPR Kg. Baru HICOM. Not only are the skills and recipes learnt useful for them to cook meals for their own family, there is also a big potential for them to generate sources of income by producing and selling food and beverages products. Thus, there were also trained on the techniques of creating their own FB products to be marketed and sold in the community and to nearby residents. An open day was held for the participants to showcase and sell their own products. As part of the ecosystem, a ‘library’ of cooking equipment was also built for the community to use. The process of managing this library was also communicated to the residents during the open day.

Dubbed as the ‘Super Mama’, members of the group also attended 3 special cooking classes at a cooking academy as part of their training to become trainers in the community. They came back and conducted 5 cooking workshops for the residents of PPR Kg. Baru HICOM.
